Livingston is located in West Central Alabama, approximately 17 miles from the Mississippi state line. Roughly 5 miles of Interstate 20 and 59 run through its jurisdiction. It is a small college community of 3,500 with an additional 2,000 college students. The City of Livingston combined its Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services in 1982. This put the department under the direction of one chief who is called the Director of Public Safety.
